Knap, who came to UNLV after starting the program at Boise State, took over the program that had been started by Bill Ireland and had most recently been coached by Ron Meyer.

Over his six-year career, Knap guided the Rebels to a 47-20-2 record. In 1976, he took the Rebels to the Division II playoffs. After UNLV moved to Division I, Knap orchestrated arguably the biggest upset in UNLV history when the undermanned Rebels shocked No. 8 Brigham Young 45-41 in Provo, Utah in 1981.
Knap retired from coaching after his stint at UNLV and has retired to Walla Walla, Washington, where he still resides.
